A WILTSHIRE health food shop has been recognised in a national competition.

Nina Hammett, 55, and her partner Stuart Hodgson, 49, have run the Green Ginger store in High Street, Corsham, for nearly seven years. The couple's shop was highly commended at the National Trade Show in Brighton last month after being nominated by a customer.

Ms Hammett said: "I think it's quite an accolade in itself. We were nominated by a customer, who we don't know.

"A rep from one of our suppliers rang us to say we were highly commended."

Green Ginger sells a variety of products, including mineral makeup, reusable nappies and sports nutrition.

The store has gained a reputation beyond the county borders.

Ms Hammett said: "People come from far afield to see us. It's been very hard work but we're quite well established in the area now."

Green Ginger is set to play its part in helping to protect the planet and support the local community.

"We're having 1,000 bags printed to sell in the shop, and £1 from every one sold is going to SNAP which supports St Nicholas School in Chippenham," said Ms Hammett.

St Nicholas supports 70 children with disabilities such as Down's syndrome, cerebral palsy and autism.

The charity appeal hopes to raise enough money for a hydrotherapy pool at the school.

As well as fundraising for SNAP, Green Ginger also works with the community to educate the public in the use of plastic bags.

The couple are formulating a plan for a plastic bag amnesty in Corsham.

Tomorrow at the Pound Arts Centre in Corsham, textile artist Alison Harper will be teaching people how to reuse plastic bags, but will also be making a piece of artwork highlighting their dangers to wildlife, especially fish.

This piece of art is due to be displayed in the window of Green Ginger once it has been completed.
