Teacher arrested for alleged attack

A science teacher is being questioned by police after a schoolboy was left with serious head injuries following an alleged attack.

Peter Harvey, who is also being questioned about alleged assaults on two other pupils, was arrested on Wednesday after the incident at All Saints' Roman Catholic School in Mansfield.

Detective Superintendent Adrian Pearson, of Nottinghamshire Police, said the two other pupils were allegedly assaulted during the same incident in which the 14-year-old was hurt, though less seriously.

The boy was taken to King's Mill Hospital in the town but his condition deteriorated during the afternoon and he was transferred to a specialist unit at the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham. The boy's condition has stabilised and his parents are with him at his bedside in the Queen's Medical Centre.

Mr Pearson said the teacher was being questioned about an alleged assault on two further pupils, a boy and a girl believed to be aged 14.

Nottinghamshire Police confirmed that a weapon was used in the attack.

Officers were called to the school in Broomhill Lane after paramedics arrived to find the pupil in a pool of blood at the entrance to a classroom in the science block.

The Year 8 class was having a science lesson when it appears a row erupted between the boy and the teacher in the classroom. It is then alleged the assault took place.

The blood-spattered classroom was forensically examined by officers and has reopened, although it is understood lessons are not being taught in it.

Mr Pearson added: "Obviously the whole class is traumatised by what has happened. People send their children here from great distances because of its academic record and what happened is very much out of character for the school. I know a number of parents have rung the headteacher about what has happened but I would appeal for everyone to be calm, particularly in relation to those people involved."
