Champagne corks were popping as the verdicts were announced in the 2007 Wiltshire Business of the Year awards.

The Wiltshire Business of the Year awards was another great success - proving just how good we are when it comes to business in the county.

From the big to the small, there are thousands of companies in Wiltshire providing thousands of jobs.

And things were a little bit different this year when there was a February 29 proposal of marriage during the awards.

Tony Davies was given a silver love heart from his partner of 25 years, Angela Lambert, bearing the inscription I love you/marry me'.

"How could I refuse? It was so beautiful," he said.

Their company, Art Meets Matter, was one of the finalists.

On the business front, 2008 might have started somewhat slowly around the country, but here in Wiltshire - and Swindon especially - we seem to get things right, and our prosperity is unique.

When it came to the number of companies wanting to enter our Business of the Year competition again, we were swamped.

The number of people who sat down to dinner at the awards evening was 271 and the De Vere is the only hotel in town who can accommodate us.

Next year they might have difficulty if our numbers continue to grow.

Last year's winners are now millionaires and it's likely this year's winners will go the same way.

They might not have won any of the seven business categories, but they were runners-up in two of them and the judges reckoned they were best overall.

Helen Browning's Organics are synonymous with Wiltshire, and they go hand in hand with the business success of the county.

They have worked hard to develop the international aspect of their business and they have truly put Wiltshire on the world map.

Their products now enjoy a 50 per cent market share nationally. They have won a number of awards nationally, but this was their first in their native county.

This was our 13th awards dinner and we are grateful to all the companies who took part and look forward to seeing them again.
