Chemical Engineers in the south-west have enjoyed a 17 per cent pay rise since 2006, according to figures published by the Institution of Chemical Engineers.

Median salaries for chemical and process engineers have risen from £34,900 to £41,000 and the average wage of a chartered chemical engineer in the region is now £50,500.

In addition to the growing rates of pay, 20 per cent of those surveyed receive a company car, and almost half a final salary pension.

The results were published as part of IChemE's biennial salary survey of its UK and Ireland-based members.

Dr David Brown, IChemE Chief Executive, welcomed the news.

"Not only are the salaries of experienced chemical engineers continuing to grow, the average UK chemical engineering graduate salary has also risen to £26,000," he said.

"There is a growing demand for chemical and process engineers. The impact of climate change is a matter of international concern and it will be chemical and process engineers who face the responsibility of finding the solutions."

Bath University offers an accredited chemical engineering degree course and almost 50 chemical engineers in the region participated in the survey the largest of its kind for chemical engineers in Europe.
